VWAP calculator and indicator

Type or paste your candles. See VWAP after every candle, on a chart with standard deviation bands and an anchored VWAP from any candle you pick.

…

How to use it

Copy each candle’s open, high, low, close and volume from your chart, starting with the first candle of the day (9:15 am on NSE), or paste them all at once from a spreadsheet or CSV file. The chart shows your candles with the VWAP line, and the first box shows the VWAP now. Tap Fill an example to see how it works.

For an anchored VWAP, choose the candle it should start from; choose candle 1 to see only the session VWAP. Bands adds lines one or two standard deviations either side of VWAP.

The formula

For each candle, the typical price is (high + low + close) ÷ 3. VWAP = total of (typical price × volume) ÷ total volume, both counted from the start of the session. Anchored VWAP is the same, counted from the candle you choose. The open is used only to draw the candle.

The bands use the volume-weighted standard deviation of the typical price around VWAP: σ = √(total of (volume × typical price²) ÷ total volume − VWAP²). The ±1σ band runs from VWAP − σ to VWAP + σ, and the ±2σ band twice as far.

Worked example

CandleHighLowCloseTypical priceVolumeRunning VWAP
110299101100.6712,000100.67
2103100.5102.5102.009,000101.24

After two candles: (100.67 × 12,000 + 102 × 9,000) ÷ 21,000 = (12,08,000 + 9,18,000) ÷ 21,000 = ₹101.24. (Typical price 1 is 100.666…, rounded here.)

Why traders watch it

VWAP is the average price paid for every share traded so far today, weighted by how many shares changed hands at each price. Large buyers use it to judge whether they bought better or worse than the day’s average. A price above VWAP means the latest trades are above that average. It resets every session and says nothing about tomorrow. Read what VWAP is for more, and VWAP vs anchored VWAP for the difference between the two lines.

Why your chart may differ a little

Charting platforms compute VWAP from every trade or from 1-minute data, while this calculator uses whatever candles you type. Five-minute candles give a close but not identical number. Platforms also differ in how they measure the bands.

Questions people ask

Is VWAP the same as the average price?
No. A simple average treats every price the same. VWAP gives more weight to prices where more shares traded.
Does VWAP carry over to the next day?
Standard VWAP starts again at every session’s open. Anchored VWAP starts from a candle you choose and carries on until you move it; this calculator draws both.
What do the bands show?
How widely the typical price has spread around VWAP, in standard deviations. They describe how stretched price has been; they do not predict a turn.
Can I use it for futures and options?
VWAP works for anything with a price and a traded volume, including futures. For thinly traded options it can jump around because few contracts trade.
