How to use it

  1. Type what you deposit every month.
  2. The rate opens on the Post Office RD rate for this quarter. For a bank RD, type your bank’s rate.
  3. Type the period. A Post Office RD runs 5 years; banks offer RDs from 6 months to 10 years.

You get the maturity amount, the interest and the value at the end of each year.

How RD interest works

Each monthly deposit earns interest from the month it is made, compounded every quarter, so the first deposit earns for the whole period and the last for one month. The maturity amount adds up each deposit’s own growth: M = Σ D × (1 + r ÷ 4)^(m ÷ 3), where D is the monthly deposit, r the yearly rate as a fraction and m the months that deposit stays in.

Worked example

₹5,000 a month for 5 years at 6.7% a year:

YearDeposited so farValue at year end
1₹60,000₹62,210
2₹1,20,000₹1,28,694
3₹1,80,000₹1,99,746
4₹2,40,000₹2,75,679
5₹3,00,000₹3,56,829

₹3,00,000 of deposits earns ₹56,829 of interest, for a maturity amount of ₹3,56,829. The Post Office’s own maturity table gives the same figure: ₹7,136.58 for every ₹100 a month.

Post Office RD rules

Bank RDs follow each bank’s own rules for missed instalments and early closure.

Tax

RD interest is taxable at your slab rate. Banks deduct tax at source when a year’s interest crosses the limit, as for FDs.

Questions people ask

How is RD maturity calculated?
Each monthly deposit grows at the rate, compounded every quarter, for the months it stays in, and the results are added up. ₹5,000 a month for 5 years at 6.7% comes to ₹3,56,829.
How long does a Post Office RD run?
5 years. At maturity it can be continued for another 5 years.
What if I miss an RD instalment?
A Post Office RD allows up to four missed instalments, with a fee of ₹1 for every ₹100 for each month missed, and the maturity moves back by that many months. With more than four the account is discontinued, unless it is revived within two months. Banks have their own rules.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes, at your slab rate.
