What Muhurat trading is

Diwali marks the start of the new Samvat year, by which many traders in India keep their accounts, and Muhurat trading is a short session on Diwali so that the year opens with a trade at an auspicious time, a muhurat. NSE and BSE hold it even when Diwali falls on a weekend: in 2026 Diwali Laxmi Pujan is on a Sunday, and NSE’s list of 2026 trading holidays (NSE/CMTR/71775) names Sunday, 8 November 2026 as the day of Muhurat trading.

How the session works

It runs like a short trading day. A pre-open session collects orders in shares and sets their opening prices, about an hour of normal trading follows, and a closing session ends it. In 2025 shares, futures and options, currency derivatives and commodity derivatives all traded in the same hour, each under an NSE circular of its own (NSE/CMTR/70319, NSE/FAOP/70320, NSE/CD/70321, NSE/COM/70362). NSE’s circulars say that all trades in the session “shall result in settlement obligations”: they are real trades, so shares you buy are paid for and delivered, and shares you sell must be delivered, as on any other day.

Charges and tax

A trade in the Muhurat session costs what it would on any other day: your broker’s brokerage, STT, the exchange’s transaction charge, SEBI’s fee, stamp duty and GST, and DP charges when you sell shares from your demat account. Profits and losses count for tax in the usual way. The brokerage calculator works out the charges on a Muhurat trade like any other.

When the trades settle

Muhurat trades settle on the usual T+1 cycle, on the next settlement day after the session. NSE Clearing settles the trades of the 2026 session on Monday, 9 November 2026 (NCL/CMPT/77037).
