How MIS works

You deposit a sum once. For 5 years the post office pays interest every month at the rate fixed on the day you open the account. The interest is paid out, not added to the deposit, so it does not compound: every month pays the same amount. After 5 years the deposit comes back.

Monthly interest = deposit × yearly rate ÷ 12

Worked example

₹9,00,000 in a single account at 7.4% a year: ₹9,00,000 × 7.4% ÷ 12 = ₹5,550 a month, or ₹66,600 a year. Over 5 years that is 60 payments, ₹3,33,000 in all, and the ₹9,00,000 comes back at the end. A joint account with ₹15,00,000 pays ₹9,250 a month.

Rules that shape the numbers

Tax

MIS interest is taxable at your slab rate, and the deposit gives no tax deduction.
