When the market is open
NSE and BSE trade on weekdays, Monday to Friday. They are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and the trading holidays each exchange announces for the year; NSE’s list is above. Each trading day starts with a short pre-open session, in which orders are collected and matched to set the opening prices, and normal trading follows until the close. Since 3 August 2026, shares that have F&O contracts end the day in a closing auction, and futures and options trade a little longer than shares; the table above gives the time of each session.
This page is about the equity and equity derivatives (F&O) markets. Currency and commodity trading keep hours and holidays of their own.
Muhurat trading on Diwali
On Diwali, NSE and BSE hold Muhurat trading: a short special session that marks the start of the new Samvat year. Trades made in it are settled like those of any other session. The exchanges announce its date and time in a circular before Diwali. For 2026 it is on Sunday, 8 November 2026; its time isn’t on our list yet.
Weekend sessions and mock trading
Now and then the exchanges hold a live session on a Saturday or Sunday, for example when the Union Budget is presented on a weekend. They announce each one in a circular, and it shows on this page once announced. The mock trading sessions they run on some Saturdays to test their systems are not real trading: nothing traded in them counts.
Bank holidays and the market
The exchanges follow their own list, not the bank holiday list. A bank holiday in your state doesn’t by itself close the market, and the market can be shut on a day banks are open.
Orders while the market is closed
Many brokers take after-market orders (AMO) while the market is shut and send them to the exchange when the next session opens. Whether yours does, and from what time, is up to your broker.
