How to use it
- Type what you deposit in each financial year, from ₹250 to ₹1,50,000.
- The rate opens on the Sukanya Samriddhi rate for this quarter. Change it to test another.
- Type her age when the account is opened. An account can be opened for a girl under 10.
- Pick when the money goes in: once a year by 5 April, or in 12 monthly deposits by the 5th.
You get the total deposited, the interest, the maturity amount and the age she will be, with her age and the balance in every year.
How the account runs
Deposits are made for the first 15 years from opening. After that no more deposits are taken, but the balance keeps earning interest until the account completes 21 years, when it matures. Interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month and added once a year, so, as with PPF, a deposit made by 5 April earns for the whole year.
Worked example
An account opened when she is 1, with ₹1,50,000 deposited by 5 April every year for 15 years, at 8.2% a year throughout:
| Year | Her age | Deposited so far | Balance at year end |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | ₹1,50,000 | ₹1,62,300 |
| 5 | 6 | ₹7,50,000 | ₹9,55,954 |
| 10 | 11 | ₹15,00,000 | ₹23,73,618 |
| 15 | 16 | ₹22,50,000 | ₹44,75,989 |
| 21 | 22 | ₹22,50,000 | ₹71,82,119 |
Deposits stop after year 15, at ₹22,50,000. The ₹44,75,989 balance then grows by interest alone for six more years, to ₹71,82,119 when the account matures and she is 22. Of that, ₹49,32,119 is interest. If the same ₹1,50,000 a year goes in as 12 monthly deposits by the 5th, the maturity amount is ₹69,32,648.
Rules that shape the numbers
- Who can open it: a parent or legal guardian, for a girl under 10: one account for each girl, for up to two girls in a family, or three when twin girls come at the second birth or triplets at the first.
- Deposits: at least ₹250 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in multiples of ₹50, for 15 years from opening. A year below ₹250 makes it a default account. It can be regularised before the 15th year by paying ₹250 and a ₹50 fee for each missed year; if it is not, the balance still earns the scheme rate.
- Education withdrawal: once she turns 18 or passes class 10, up to half of the balance at the end of the previous financial year can be taken out for her education, once a year for up to five years.
- Early closure: on her marriage after she turns 18, from a month before to three months after the wedding, and in a few other cases such as the death of the account holder.
The rate changes every quarter and applies to the whole balance, so one rate for 21 years is an estimate.
Tax
The interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. Under the old tax regime, deposits count towards the ₹1.5 lakh a year deduction; the new tax regime gives no deduction for them.
